I enjoyed birding at the Great Plains Lakes on Oct 26 & 27. I live in Canon City and drive down to your area one or more times every year to view the many great birds that can be seen in the area. As you are probably aware, Colorado birders from as far as Fort Collins routinely visit SE Colo.

I now live in Ohio and get lonely for the wide open space.... Well take care all of you in Kiowa County and the Sand Creek Massacre is one of my interest since I was in school at Plainview and did a report many years ago.. thank you for all the memories...Marsha

Special thanks to the folks who contributed to our Order of Indian Wars tour Sept. 5 because Sand Creek was my only stop this year. Due to schedule conflicts, I was unable to tour Ft. Union, Beecher Island, Kidder, etc. I had wanted to see the site for over 10 years, but didn't know how to access the properties. Many folks helped my whim without my ever expecting it. Vern Harris, Leroy Mauch, Lola Igou and Darren Glove drove all 50 of us to the site with grand care. Old Army Press of Ft. Collins sent their salesman Koury who sat behind me and Mrs. Igou all the way.... talking. I worried she might think she'd been drafted to drive a school bus. But she kept her cool. Rod Brown and John Stulp helped us with groundwork for the tour. Sharon Frazee didn't flinch when our mob crowded her restaurant without ordering cheeseburgers. I'll try them on my next trip. My folks moved from Hodgeman County, Kansas, to Colorado Springs during the Dust Bowl. Grandpa Neeley was County Engineer for a time, and GreatGrandpa designed and built Kansas' first steel-reinforced road bridges, I'm told. And I got to drive the Hodgeman County dump truck during summer vacation at age 14 (1949) because Uncle Phil Taylor was road foreman. I'd forgotten how nice it is to be in the open and remembered as Mrs. Igou drove us to the site. This web site is the most impressive I've seen, and the only music I've allowed in our house during my turn on the computer. Thanks

Thank you...I enjoyed reading your site. So nice to see so many visitors have checked it out. I especially liked reading about the lakes of Kiowa County...brought back many good memories. I grew up and lived by those beautiful lakes and land, even though I am now grown and my parents George and Vicki Pittman do not live near Eads, I still consider it my home. It was nice to go to a small school and feel like your friends were family. Again, thank you. If anyone is interested in contacting me that would be great. Kim (Pittman) King...EHS Class of 1987

We belong to the OIW group who were invited by the Bowen family to visit part of their ranch property at Sand Creek. Being treated to the artifacts discovered on this land, and having a first-hand look at this site most definitely was the high point of our attendance this year. We admire Chuck Bowen and the people helping him for their painstaking research to establish the historic truth of the Cheyenne/Arapahoe camp site and the events in November 1864. Thank you, Chuck and Sheri, for sharing this with us. We also thank commissioners Rod Brown and John Stulp for their hard work to make this possible, as well our thanks to commissioners Vern Harris and Leroy Mauch, and Lola Igou and Darran Glover, who safely transported our group across the land. Sharon Frazee, your restaurant surely was "Our Place" for a short while, a place to rest,(not to speak of other necessary activities), view the artifacts, and enjoy refreshments. As always, we had travelled a long way to attend the annual OIW assembly. This year's meeting has been very special due to the efforts of all the people mentioned above. Thanks again, Bernd and Erika Brand, Pembroke Pines, Florida

As a new member of OIW, I had the pleasure to be part of the contingent which visited the Sand Creek Site and experience the hospitality of the people in Kiowa County. A special thanks to Chuck & Sheri Bowen for taking the time to share their discoveries and allowing us to visit their property. We were certainly made to feel welcome! I would also like to thank the Kiowa and Prowers County Commissioners (Rod Brown & John Stulp) who arranged and provided the transportation to the Bowen ranch. It was greatly appreciated sirs! It would seem that controversy has not dimished with the passage of time and everyone has his/her opinion on almost every aspect of this site. It is my express wish that all involved will do the upmost in preserving the grounds (wherever it may be) that has become the center of so mush interest and discussion.

Hi, My name is Don Macreadie and I visited the Sand Creek site with Jerry Russell's OIW group on Sept. 5. I can believe after the information presented, seeing the site, and viewing the artifacts presented by the Bowen family, that the actual site is on their property. I want to thank Sheri and Chuck Bowen for the hard work to find and explore the site, and taking the time to show and explain it to our group. Also, thanks to the people from Kiowa and Prowers Counties for providing transportation for our group to the site--I know all who attended appreciated that!! I hope the Bowens can get some county, state and federal help to make the site available to the public--so all those interested can see it. Thanks again for a wonderful experience. Don Macreadie

I have been following the Sand Creek Saga and read all the pertinent information from the National Meeting. I wish to commend the Bowens on their steadfast work for the truth of the true location of one of the worst events in the history of Native America. I hope that the words and efforts of all who strive to properly designate correct historical areas will be heard by those who are seriously overpayed and have no concept of proper preservation of our own Country. They seem too preoccupied with saving some piece of ground in some remote part of the world where we are not even wanted, needed, or appreciated.

It’s sad that Jeff Broome has to insult the intelligence of the kind folks of Kiowa County about the mechanics of logic. There is no “Red Herring” involved here. If you’ll revisit my original post, I distinctly mentioned two campaigns that Jerry Russell is asking his robot members to divulge in; insisting the NPS change all references of “massacre” to “battle” regarding Sand Creek and the location of the Sand Creek Massacre site. It’s true, one issue may be more emotional than the other but both are equal. I also wished to bring to the attention of Kiowa County and its website’s readers that the “thank-you” letters suddenly appearing in the guest book regarding the field trip to Sand Creek were penned as a direct result of Jerry Russell’s request to his OIW members. It’s important for these readers to know that there is a hidden agenda in the OIW regarding Sand Creek (on both issues stated above) and he’s using the nice folks of the Kiowa County website to promote this hidden agenda. Again, Russell is using his members to interfere with our legislators over this flimsy issue. I urge the OIW members to write a solider in Afghanistan or Iraq if they want to be useful.

Hello: I too was a visitor at the Sand Creek site with the Order of the Indian Wars. Chuck and Sheri Bowen deserve tremendous credit for their efforts in producing overwhelming evidence that the events of November 29, 1864 occurred on the Bowen Ranch property. The issue with Mr. unnamed Ron in his negative comments about the Order of the Indian Wars and Jerry Russell's urging people to oppose efforts to call the National Historic Site a massacre is nothing more than what is taught in basic college logic courses as a Red Herring, i.e., an attempt to use an issue that draws emotional responses in such a way as to divert the listerner/reader away from the real issue. Let me remind you what the real issue is: Where was the November 29, 1864 village of Black Kettle located and where did the fight/massacre/battle occur? That is the question, and readers should not be diverted away from THAT issue by getting involved with the emotional issue of whether it was a massacre or a battle. Have or have not the Bowens located the actual site? That is the question, and readers should realize that Ron is trying to get people away from THAT question. The answer to THAT question is overwhelming that the village in 1864 was on the Bowen property and not at the traditional site. Regardless of how the new National Parks site is managed or what it is named, the question is, do you want it on the real site or a site that had nothing to do with November 29, 1864. I urge readers to understand that Ron is only throwing a Red Herring out for the simple purpose of diverting people away from the important question, viz., where was the village in 1864? That question was answered with solid artifactual evidence on September 5th to those fortunate members of the Order of Indian Wars, the first group of interested historians to visit the actual site. Kudos to the Bownes for wanting truth and not myth associated with Sand Creek. And I do hope the good people of Kiowa County realize this, and realize a destructive Red Herring when it is thrown in their face by people more interested in myth than truth. Red Herrings always reveal such motives. That's why they are used. Logic 101. Jeff Broome

You may notice a sudden onslaught of comments from people that have never posted in the Kiowa CO website's guest book. They suddenly want to discuss the correct site of the Black Kettle village and the Sand Creek MASSACRE. The reason for all these folks cheerfully thanking Kiowa County is due to Jerry Russell, leader of the OIW and his requesting his members to write. Here is what Jerry wrote to his members; "Please go to <www.kiowacountycolo.com> and sign the guest book. Tell them you have just read about a national meeting that visited the Sand Creek site on the Bowen Ranch, and understand that it was an excellent tour, making a persuasive case for believing that the site of Black Kettle's village was on the Bowen Ranch. Chuck and Sheri Bowen, and their family, deserve a great deal of credit for this discovery, but they have been pretty well ignored by the National Park Service (as you will remember from the original news release...which I am sending along just in case you didn't get to read it carefully). Please do this, for the Bowens, and for Indian Wars history. These people deserve our help, and history cries out for our help." Jerry has launched another campaign to "delete the term 'massacre' from all Park Service material dealing with the Sand Creek site." Jerry has the audacity to ask him members to consume the time of our nations Senators and Congressmen, during a time of war, by writing them and insisting that the NPS use the term "Battle" instead of "Massacre" in all their official writings. All this is based on two pseudo-historians who have published or about to publish two outrageous books that claim the Sand Creek Massacre was a battle. Because of racists attitudes by members of the OIW who still think the American Indian is “the enemy” they have fallen victim to the two terrible examples of “historians” and actually believe that Sand Creek was a battle. I urge all followers of the OIW to not write your Senators and Congressmen on this flippant case, but instead write one of our soldiers currently fighting for our freedom in Afghanistan and/or Iraq. Finally, I ask everyone to keep his or her eyes peeled for what will be the definitive biography on Black Kettle. The writer is from your state of Colorado. When I shared with him the idiotic frame of minds of the OIW he became somewhat disgruntled. He says he has reviewed every document known to man about the Sand Creek MASSACRE and there is no way anyone of reasonable mind could believe otherwise. BTW—Every credible historian who has written on Sand Creek has concluded it was a massacre. Thank you for your time, Ron

I recently visited the Sand Creek battle site with the Order of the Indian Wars. It was a beautiful day and an excellent tour. I'd like to thank the Bowens for allowing all of us to visit their property and sharing with us their discoveries. Thanks also to Kiowa County and the folks at Our Place Restaurant for being so nice and accomodating to our large group. I recently finished a new book about Sand Creek, to be published early in 2004. It wouldn't have been as thorough without input from Chuck and Sheri Bowen, who showed me their artifacts and shared the story of their archaeological and historical work. Because of their desire to uncover the story of the Sand Creek affair, we may be closer than ever before to correct site location and historical accuracy. They have put in a lot of hard work on this, and I hope they receive the local support they deserve, as well as recognition from the national historical organizations. Good job all around!

I was a part of the recent contingent of Order of Indian Wars members to visit the Sand Creek attack site at the Bowen Ranch. First off, I want to thank and compliment Kiowa County for providing the transportation to the ranch, as well as to the two commissioners (I didn't get their names) who took time out of their day to drive the vans! That was a great gesture on the part of the county and I hope the electorate appreciates your leadership. I enjoyed visiting what I believe to be the true site of Chivington's attack. I'd hope the county would continue to work with the Bowen family AND the National Park Service to develop this site for present and future generations. I'd like to come back to Kiowa County, to once again visit the Bowen ranch but this time as the CENTER of study for this chapter in American history. Happy trails, Jeff Barnes Omaha, NE

I enjoying learning about the recent (9/2003) tour by Ed Bearss and other historians from across the nation of the Bowen ranch site of Indian village and likely site of the 1864 Sand Creek Battle. I hope this important site can be studied in detail and preserved, if it turns out to be the site of the Sand Creek Battle. I'm a bit disappointed in what I read about the casual attitude of the NPS toward investigating this site. Regards, Ray James, P.E., Ph.D. College Station, Texas

An interesting web site, especially concerning the Sand Creek Massacre. Have all possible investigations into this area been completed? How about in the surrounding area, specifically on the Bowen ranch? As a historical researcher of the 1800s, I think this area should also be looked at. It would be good to know an event as important as Sand Creek would be thoroughly looked at, and not limited due to politically correct or special interest reasons!

Thank you for your references to the two books by Irving Howbert. They have been added to the Sand Creek Massacre book list. The book by Gregory Michno will be listed when it is published.

Regarding the location of the massacre site, according to National Park Service officials, the portion of the Bowen's ranch where artifacts have been found is within the boundaries of the Sand Creek Massacre site as it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is within the Sand Creek Massacre National Historic Site boundaries authorized by Congress.

Very impressive web page. It seems the books listed are done in an effort to list all books that relate to Sand Creek. But if so, then Irving Howbert's "The Indians of the Pike's Peak Region" and "Memories of a Lifetime in the Pike's Peak Region" should also be listed. And Gregory Michno has written a new book on Sand Creek, due out in early 2004, on the Military Perspective of Sand Creek, and published by Upton and Sons, Publishers, El Segundo, CA. And, perhaps most importantly, there should be some acknowledgement of the more than 3,000 battle related artifacts discovered on the Bowen ranch in the last few years, which forces, for historical truth, a major reassessment of the actual battle area and where the Cheyenne village was most likely located. This is especially controversial as it vitiates the authenticity of the traditional site (Dawson's sold land) as being connected with the Indian village and ensuing violence that occurred November 29, 1864. When looking up the Hargis family tree I found where a town once called
Hargisville used to be somewhere around Kiowa, CO in the early 1900's.
I thought I would find out more about Kiowa. It looks like a very beautiful place.

Hey! My name is Ashley Gren. I was really good friends with Keyvis Gilmore and
his brother Steven Gilmore in the 5th and 6th grade. I heard he now plays for the Eads Eagles. If the newspaper there sees this message, remind them to mention
me at thier next interview with him. P.S I no longer live in Dodge city, KS I now live
in Oklahoma City, OK.

It's pretty good as a former resident of Eads. However, I was hoping to find more
info on the class reunions as to what the dress code will be or should be as have
not received anything since mailing in confirmation and fee required for the dinner, etc. Sincerely, Karl

My company provides carefully selected Caregivers to help the elderly and
disabled remain independent at home. We also provide respite to the family caregivers. I have had the privilege of helping families in Elbert county and would
like to know how I can further get the word out (via your web site )about our capabilites. Mary Terlep, the county nurse is familiar with what we do. Any
thoughts would be appreciated. Thank you, Tom Barton / Barton Home Care, LLC

Years ago, before the depression, our family ranched in the Kiowa area. Would appreciate any information you could give me to help finding the old deed and
family brand. Your Ghost Riders is so fitting for your county. I hope it is meaningful
to today's generation. Sure brings to mind wonderful stories we were told about
the ranch the last cattle drive. It is nice to see what is going on even though I am unable to participate. Sincerely, Peggy Cook

I lived in Eads in 1935 for a brief period. My Dad was Oliver (Keg) Young. We
were with a core dilling crew for ITIO AND lived in the only hotel in town. My
memories of Eads was nothing short of fantastic. Trout fishing, pheasant, quail,
dove and more was our staple during the depression. I doubt if there are that
many who remember that period, but I would love to here from those who do. My
son went through Eads a couple of years back and he said the way that I
described Eads would not be much different today. I hope so. Regards, Bob
Young

looked at it, and found it very colorful and interesting. Good work, Sharon. I
browsed through the guestbook and found email addresses for friends and even some family that I haven't seen for several years! What a super deal! Local news,
a cool web site and finding friends! What could be better! Would love to hear from anyone that would like to write. Thanks. Vicki (Holcomb) Morgan

I enjoyed your website very much. I was born at Eads, Colo. and my parents and grandparents owned what is being called the Dawson Ranch at that time. My
parents were Ellis and Mildred Rutledge and My grandparents were Levi and Florence Rutledge, they also owned Moms Motel, in Eads, at one time. I came through there a few years ago as I wanted to take a picture of the house that my Father built just to the East of the Sand Creek Massacre Site, but I was stopped
by one of the farmers in that area and was told it was not safe to drive up to the house. I left the area without the picture. I was wondering if someone from your
area could take a picture of the house for me. I would be willing to pay for it and
would appreciate it very much. There were no pictures of the house in any of my parents albums. Thank you very much. Cynthia L. Gillespie Box 502 Elkhart, Ks. 67950

Very impressive. I've been watching the Sand Creek developments for several
years and had the chance to pass through Kiowa County two weeks ago while in Colorado on a combined business and pleasure trip. Never forget to protect the places and sights that make Kiowa County special. As a current Washington, DC resident, I can tell you that your wide open spaces and small, friendly towns would
be the envy of a lot of people in these cities back east.

Nice job!! I was born and reared in Eads. Went through schools there. It was a
really nice small town atmosphere and seems to have maintained that relaxed atmosphere. Again, you have done a job that all of the residents of the County
can be proud of.

I was very impressed with what I found. I was just curious to find out what kind
of information you had on the people that homesteaded your county. My
grandparents were among those that did. Their name was Kois. I would be
interested if you had any information on the homesteaders.

Thank you. Gerri Fells

I really like your website. I am Ruthanna J.'s great-niece. My grandparents have
lived in Eads since I was born, and my parents have recently moved to Eads.
You have done a great work with the website. I look forward to exploring the site, especially the information about economic development opportunities in Kiowa County. If you have any more information on this subject than is on the website, please email me!
